Hairdressers and PPE – Preparing to Return to Work

Many businesses are preparing to get back to work in the near future, including hairdressing salons which are planning to reopen in July. This is following the restrictions in place in the UK due to the coronavirus outbreak. While places are busy implementing system changes and furniture layouts to allow for social distancing measures, face-to-face services such as hairdressing are needing to go a step further and also prepare for welcoming customers into the workplace in close proximity. This includes sourcing sufficient PPE for clients and staff, and ensuring that everyone in the salons will have the protection they need to stop the spread and keep safe.

For hairdressers, PPE products are something that they will not have needed to think about previously, but now need to consider with importance to prepare for working with the ‘new normal’. The most important items for hairdressing salons to use daily will be disposable face masks and disposable gloves. This will help to prevent the spread of coronavirus and are essential items for hairdressers to carry out their appointments safely for both the stylists and clients. By using fresh PPE for each appointment, this will greatly reduce the risk of cross-contamination and will put customers at ease and help staff to feel safer too.

Face masks are essential for hairdressers to work safely in the current climate, as they obviously cannot socially distance with clients to carry out their work. Both clients and stylists will need to wear face masks to ensure everyone is kept safe during appointments. Combined with enhanced hand hygiene, salons can maintain a safe environment for everyone. Hand sanitiser will need to be available for all customers to use, and stylists will likely need individual bottles to keep on their person and use throughout the day. At Gilt Edged we have worked with a local distillery and now have our own brand of 80% alcohol hand sanitiser gel, which we are able to bottle on-site in our factory, allowing us to get sanitiser orders to businesses very quickly. We are always updating our PPE range and we will have even more items for hairdressing salons soon, including protective capes.

It is also a good idea to personalise employee’s belongings so there is no cross-contamination between them, for example these pens and drinks bottles. Your logo can be branded alongside names for an on-brand promotional item that is helping to keep your workers safe. For hairdressers on their feet all day, they need plenty of liquids to keep them going whether it’s water, tea or coffee, and these items provide the perfect solution to keep them hydrated during this time when you’re not allowed to make a round of tea for everyone!
