Has lockdown changed the working landscape forever?

It’s nearly a year since we headed into our first lockdown, and the world looks quite different. The unveiling of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown has certainly raised questions on what the future of the workplace might look like, after many companies have successfully managed the forced transition to home working.

Many surveys have been conducted on working from home during the pandemic, with results showing improvements in productivity but a negative impact on mental health. It also brought to light concerns over junior staff and the ability to train them well. For some businesses cutting costs with smaller premises and lower bills has real tangible benefits. It also has financial benefits for employees eliminating the work commute. However the need to feel the physical environment is vital in welcoming new employees and maintaining strong and healthy business relationships.

Home working can be beneficial for employees and businesses but it needs to be done right. As proven over the last year, people consistently working from home can create a better work life balance and increase productivity, although on a social side it is tough on our mental health. This shows benefits of the office to lift moods and for general wellbeing. It is also much easier for colleagues to communicate when collaborating on projects. A flexible approach going forward may work best for many companies. Businesses need to consider the return to work and if blending home working and office time can work for you.

Here at Gilt Edged, almost half our team have been working from home during the pandemic. Whatsapp, Zoom and Messenger have become essential aids to keep our communication flowing. Whilst it has worked well to keep people safe, we are looking forward to coming together again in the office. Prior to coronavirus we had some staff working remotely; lockdown has shown we can continue offering this with more flexibility.

Reflecting the changing landscape, there are differences in how and what promotional products are being used and how they’re distributed. Drinks bottles, mugs, multi-cables, wireless chargers, notebooks, sanitiser, confectionery and masks have proved to be the most popular items. This could be as they’re most practical for working from home, new items combatting COVID-19 or to make someone smile. There has been a rise in fulfilment of promotional products with more items being sent directly to home addresses. We offer fully GDPR compliant fulfilment options and can support your needs from small postal items to gift boxes with multiple branded items.

If lockdown has changed how we work in future, one thing is sure to stay – the need for branded promotional products. They’re successful for inclusivity, and for supporting virtual meetings and brand campaigns.
